Adam V's Guidelines for Writing Technical Instructions

Foundation – Address the instructions with a heading about what you are going to talk about to avoid any confusion. You should always start each instruction with a verb, such as open, close, remove, etc. Before you start writing your instructions, put any necessary notes or warnings at the beginning of each instruction. This is very important in the long run.

Audience – Considering the audience is very important. If you are writing instructions for kids, you need to write in words kids would understand. The audiences’ skill level varies so it is key for you to know whom you are writing for. Giving kids complicated instructions that only adults can read is unnecessary

Illustrations – When providing illustrations please label and caption them to the best of your ability. You do not want a picture that is full of cluster with captions or picture that does not help in describing what its purpose is. Having illustrations are great visuals can make the instruction proccess much easier.

Bullets or Numbers? – When the instructions are important you would use numbers as you list each instruction. If the instructions are not important, you use the bullet list format.

Length – For each heading try to avoid writing more than ten instructions. Having more than ten instructions would add confusion to the reader. It is important to break up the instructions in headings to avoid going over ten. By keeping your instructions brief, it is easier for your reader to complete the selected task.

  1. Adam,

Good job on explaining the key points to writing technical instructions. You should have included an introduction explaining what your blog is about and also a conclusion summing up the information given. Other than that, nice job!

  2. more voice needed....blog writing isn't academic writing...you need to tell your stories in addition to giving information

an introduction is needed before you plunge into the steps
