Carolina M.'s Writing Correctly in a Cover Letter

In order to get your dream job, you have to first create your resume and cover letter. The cover letter is one of the most important parts in getting that job because it is your first impression to them. So if you want to impress that employer the first time they look over your cover letter, then pay close attention to some tips on how to write a correct cover letter.

1. After you are done with your resume start thinking about your cover letter.
2. There are two types of cover letters
o Letter of application
• This letter is written in response to an ad or a job vacancy notice.
o Letter of inequity
• Used for general position or for internships.
3. On your cover letter is very important to put the employer name and title, also be sure to spell the name and company title correctly!
4. This tip is very important! If you do not know the gender of the employer then instead of writing Mr. or Ms., then write Dear “Alex Smith,” putting both the first and last name of the employer.
5. Limit the cover letter to one typewritten page.
6. Open your cover letter with a very strong first paragraph to get attention from the employers.
7. The cover letter needs to be concise, interesting, and on point. The letter needs to be grammatically correct as well as keeping the paragraphs short.
8. “Focus on how you can contribute to the organization”
9. Read your letter to make sure that what you want it to communicate is what you wrote.
10. Proofread your letter for punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors. Do not forget that this is your first impression and any error can eliminate you from consideration.
11. Do not forget to sign your cover letter!
